Air Quality
The follow up and control of the atmospheric emissions are made through monitoring actions in different categories, the sum of which ensures the Air Quality:

1st Occupational Sampling - at SAMA, SACB and Partner (contractors) workstations. It monitors the quantity of fibers to which the collaborators are exposed in their normal activities. Implemented in 1977, currently more than 50 workstations are sampled on a monthly basis.

2nd Iso-kinetic Sampling - it monitors the quantity of fibers in the output of the chimneys. Implemented in 1999.
3rd Environmental Sampling - it monitors the quantity of asbestos fibers in the City of Minaçu and at SAMA. Implemented in 1985.
4th Tindalometric Sampling - it monitors the quantity of particulate matters issued by the chimneys, self-vacuum, brooming machines and vacuum cleaners. Implemented in 1977.
5th Sampling of Total Airborne Particulate Matter - it monitors the quantity of total airborne particulate matter around the enterprise. Implemented in 1998.
6th Sampling of Sulfur and Nitrogen Oxides - it monitors the quantity of gases in the output of the drying chimney. Implemented in 1998.

Water Quality
The use of water also complies with the principle of rational usage of the natural resources. Thus, the water used for consumption is taken and treated in a station of the company, the same happening with the effluents, which pass through a process for elimination of impurities before being returned to the natural streams.
Water and oil splitting boxes are also built at strategic points. Finally, a monitoring schedule of all effluents attests the quality of the water released by the enterprise.

Consumption Reduction
The Central-Western Region is subject to a season of significant dry weather, which causes a significant reduction in the availability of water for several uses. Such fact, allied to the proposal of minimizing the use of natural resources, leaded SAMA to implement several consumption reduction actions, among which the CADA Project - Environmental Awareness against Waste of Water. New actions are being taken to reduce the consumption even more and the fight against waste.

Monitoring
The treatment of the SAMA industrial effluent is comprised of water and oil splitter (SAO), decantation boxes and decantation lagoons.
The effluent is monitored from time to time by a specialized company. The return to the environment with the quality required for other purposes is the goal of SAMA.
The whole domestic effluent (residential village and industry) is treated in the ETE - Effluent Treatment Station, monitored by SAMA and by specialized external companies.

Soil Quality
In the area intended to the mining activities, the work is performed according to the principle of respect to the environment. Concurrently to the mining works, the disposal of the waste and of the sterile is carried out focusing to minimize the impact inherent to the process.

Such disposal is made in belt-shape, with the deposit being built from the external to the internal part. Such kind of work allows the recovery of those deposits in the measure as the walls are being formed, with the vegetal covering made annually from the plantation of grass, Leguminosae and species that may be adapted to the new conditions.

Construction of cascades
The disposal of the sterile extracted from the mine and of the waste resulting from the processing of chrysotile is made so as to ensure the stability of those disposal stacks. For such purpose, they are built with slopes of preset heights, with inclination of the berns to inside the stacks and with cascade systems to control the rain waters, avoiding the loading of solids for the draining of the region. The stack slopes are protected with soil for later implementation of the vegetal coverage, focusing the protection against erosion and also the appearance of dust.

Correct Disposal of Waste
The generation and disposal of products that may affect the environment is a constant concern of companies considered as top companies. Therefore, SAMA is also concerned in disposing its waste correctly, such as:

* Water/oil waste -- splitting/disposal
* Fluorescent lamp -- segregation/disposal
* Lubricant oil -- re-refining
* Plastics -- recycling
* Industrial scrap -- recycling
* Industrial towels -- industrial washing

Although being far from the large cities and from the main waste disposal companies, SAMA has been giving priority to the resources for those essential stations for the control of the environmental pollution.
